Recently, with all the market turmoil, I’ve been very interested in finding new sources of information about what’s going on. In particular, my interest has been piqued as I’m taking a course on financial reporting and corporate finance - an especially relevant subject with all of the recent events. So, I’ve been trying out a number of different sources for both current events and background information, and I thought I’d share what I’ve found here.
First, in terms of up-to-date information about the markets, I’ve found BusinessWeek Online to be especially helpful. I’m a subscriber to the magazine and have a login to the online portion. I’ve gotten relevant and up-to-the-minute news, as well as helpful background information. I especially appreciate the tone of the articles: they don’t assume a deep understanding of the economics behind the issues, but don’t water it down the way more general news outlets do.
Second, I’ve been looking for interesting podcasts to provide more background information behind the headlines. So I decided to check out the BusinessWeek podcasts. Aside from The Business Week podcast (which is excellent), I wasn’t particularly impressed with the others (they don’t seem to be updated very often).
I’m right now trying out several of the Bloomberg Radio podcasts, which I’m finding interesting. Right now, I’m subscribed to Bloomberg On the Economy Columnists, and Law. The Bloomberg Law podcast has been interesting (even though I have no background in law), while the On the Economy podcast has been very in-depth. I don’t pretend to understand everything discussed, but I am picking up useful pieces here and there.
Finally, because I’m a fan of eye candy and love to see lots of activity, I’ve had the Bloomberg Market Monitor open on my desktop over the last few days. On Monday, with the Triple-7 drop in the Dow, I followed the action by the second, which was very exciting. I’ll be sure to continue updating this blog as I find more resources.
